Introduction of cerium element:

Cerium is a silver-grey active metal. Its powder is easy to spontaneously ignite in the air and is easily soluble in acid. The name cerium comes from the English name of the asteroid Ceres.

The content of cerium in the earth's crust is about 0.0046%, which is the most abundant rare earth element. Its content is about three times that of lead. It mainly exists in monazite and bastnasite, and also exists in the fission products of uranium, thorium and plutonium. middle. There are four stable isotopes of cerium existing in nature: cerium 136, cerium 138, cerium 140 and cerium 142, of which cerium 140 has the highest content at 88.48%.

Properties of metallic cerium:

Cerium is easily oxidized at room temperature and loses its luster in the air. It can burn in the air if scraped with a knife (pure cerium is not easy to spontaneously ignite, but it is extremely easy to spontaneously ignite when slightly oxidized or alloyed with iron). When heated, it burns in air to form cerium dioxide. It can react with boiling water to produce cerium hydroxide, which is soluble in acid but insoluble in alkali. Cerium can also burn in halogens, such as chlorine, to produce cerium trichloride (CeCl3). When subjected to low temperatures and high pressures, a diamagnetic body emerges that is 18% denser than the ordinary form of cerium. Used to make flint, ceramics and alloys. Cerium is the most reactive rare earth element after europium. Cerium reacts slowly in cold water and faster in hot water.

Preparation method of cerium metal:

Metal cerium can be prepared by reducing cerium trifluoride with calcium or electrolyzing molten cerium trichloride or other cerium halides.

Uses of cerium metal:

Cerium has a wide range of applications, and almost all rare earth applications contain cerium. Such as polishing powder, hydrogen storage materials, thermoelectric materials, cerium tungsten electrodes, ceramic capacitors, piezoelectric ceramics, cerium silicon carbide abrasives, fuel cell raw materials, gasoline catalysts, certain permanent magnet materials, various alloy steels and non-ferrous metals, etc.

Major applications of cerium metal:

1. Used as reducing agent and catalyst.

2. Used as alloy additives, used in the production of cerium salts, etc., and also used in medicine, tanning, glass, textile and other industries.

3. Cerium can be used as catalyst, arc electrode, special glass, etc. Cerium alloys are resistant to high heat and can be used to make jet propeller parts.
